FCC ADOPTS RULES FOR UNLICENSED USE OF TELEVISION WHITE SPACES

The FCC continues to follow thru on it’s commitment to facilitating opportunities to provide broadband services to all of America as it sees the critcial importance of such services “to the nation’s present and future prosperity.” [reference FCC bulletin April 16, 2007]

This is great news for those of us who deploy wireless product!

Because the TV white spaces spectrum is a low frequency, typical line of sight challenges are mitigated.  Deploying in this frequency will allow for penetration thru trees and even buildings.

The surrounding controversy is with the broadcasters who don’t want to relinquish the spectrum even though they will be coverting from analog to digital transmissions in February 2009.  Additionally there are issues regarding interference with products that have already been using these frequencies, e.g., wireless microphone companies.  The FCC already has plans to oversee and monitor cooperation amongst deployers by requiring that all deployed devices have geolocation and data base access capabilities.  This means a deployed device must contact a satellite with it’s location.  The location will be matched in a database that checks for potential frequency conflicts.

While the news of the new open spectrum is great, the details surrounding cooperative deployment are still sketchy indicating to me there will be some time before the first deployments take place.

Fay Strong, but airPowered even stronger

Fay became the first storm of its kind in recorded history to make landfall four times in Florida.  Throughout all the wind, rain, and storm related damage, airPowered kept its customer’s connected and operational at lightning fast speeds.

Surviving the storm is not the goal of airPowered, beating the storm is what airPowered is all about.  No wires and cables to get dropped in high winds or ripped apart by falling trees.  AirPowered stays ahead of any storm using sophisticated technology that can keep you connected, even in the worst conditions.  Check out how airPowered works by visiting http://power1.com/airpowered/docs/salesbook.pdf

Protecting your equipment in severe weather

Operation Hunker Down - 2008: Darn you, Fay!

So hurricane season is obviously here and rocking, and a lot faster than we would probably like. As most of us Floridians already know, protecting your valuable equipment during severe weather is extremely important. There’s obviously no need to panic with Tropical Storm Fay approaching (how many storms have we been through by now?), but some care and caution is needed to prevent any unnecessary loss of computer equipment. It’s about finding the middle ground between panic and complacency.

So go grab your handy Ziploc freezer bags and read the list below to get yourself ready for the storm. Come on, everyone with me now, “hunker down!”

Empower your 3Com NBX phone system to do more!

One of the most useful features of the 3Com NBX phone system to the end user is the ability to check your voicemail via your email client like Microsoft Outlook or Eudora. Setting up your email client to check your extension’s voicemail is easy! Below I will outline how to set up Outlook 2007.

  1. Open Outlook 2007
  2. Click the Tools menu
  3. Chose the Account Settings… option
  4. If you are not already on the Email tab, click the Email tab
  5. Click New…
  6. Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP should be your default selection. If so, click Next >.
  7. Type in Your Name (ex: Jane Doe), E-mail Address (ex: janedoe@airpowered.com), and your NBX voicemail password in the Password field (and confirm).
  8. Before clicking Next select the check box next to Manually configure server settings or additional server types.
  9. Click Next >
  10. Chose the default Internet E-mail option
  11. Click Next >
  12. The User Information should be filled out already from the previous screen.
  13. Change the Account Type to IMAP
  14. The Incoming mail server should be the IP address of the phone system (you will need to ask your local administrator or PowerOne for this information).
  15. The Outgoing mail server (SMTP) should be the IP address of your local mail server (Exchange) or your ISPs outgoing mail server (SMTP). Again, you will probably need to ask your local administrator for this information.
  16. Under Logon Information your User Name is your extension number (ex: 1234) and your Password is your voicemail password.
  17. You will probably want the box checked for Remember password and do not check the box for Secure Password Authentication (SPA).
  18. Click Next >
  19. Click Finish
Now you will be able to view all of your voicemails in your email client. This will allow you to mark voicemails as read (but not delete) so the light on your 3Com phone will go out but you’ll still be able to reference the voicemail. You can also selectively delete the voicemails from your mail client. Keep in mind messages marked for deletion (will appear to have a line through the text) will not be deleted until you “purge” the inbox. To do this go to the Edit menu, then Purge, then select Purge Marked Items in “Inbox.”
Enjoy!

IE7 to Firefox - Why make the switch?

For years, IE has enjoyed supreme domination over all other web browsers. But this clear majority has become less clear over the years. Consider this: according to information from NetApplications.com, in October 2004 Internet Explorer had 92 percent of the market; as of July 2008, IE users have dropped to 72% with Mozilla’s Firefox picking up the slack and claiming 19.22% of the market. Safari trails behind with 6.14%.  This means that if you’re still using IE, you may find yourself in the minority sooner than you’d think.

PowerOne expands service to Orlando, adds 20 new jobs

PowerOne Internet LLC will spend $3 million and create 20 new jobs by expanding its airPowered business-class Internet service into the Orlando market by the end of this year.

The Tavares-based communications and technology solutions company will use high-speed wireless technology designed by Motorola.

The expansion will consist of mounting 17 operating towers in Central Florida used to communicate with PowerOne’s network and send the Internet signal to wall-mounted units given to subscribers.

The new positions will be added during the next 12 months to PowerOne’s sales and technology support staffs, which usually work from home.
